John Mayer Mocks LeBron’s ‘The Decision’

Posted by David Lee On July - 10 - 2010

No one really understood why LeBron James had to make a big fuss about his decision to leave Cleveland for a more championship-promising Miami and turn it into a one-hour special, in fact, many saw it as simply narcissistic advertising tolerated by sporting networks like ESPN.

But others, such as wittingly funny and Grammy winning artist John Mayer, saw this as an opportunity not only to make fun of Cleveland’s new villain, but also to plug his upcoming tour – in complete LeBron fashion and emotionless delivery – and to show everyone that he has a funny side and the smarts to use the narcissistic whims of one LeBron James and turn it into comedic gold.

To really rise to the occasion, the first two cities that Mayer plugged was his shows in Cleveland (August 13, Blossom Music Center) and Miami (September 11, Cruzan Amphitheatre) – “I’m going to play for Cleveland…I’ll also be playing for Miami” – beat that LeBron!

Mayer also vowed to wow people with his “immense display of talent” in his other shows in New York and New Jersey later this month, and in a string of shows in the west coast from late August to September 1.  Keith Urban will be appearing in Mayer’s show in Seattle on August 28.

John Mayer Adds Summer Dates to ‘Battle Studies’ Tour

Posted by Janice Bryant On March - 31 - 2010

Summer dates have been added to John Mayer’s 2010 world tour, extending his ongoing outing to support “Battle Studies,” the fourth studio album of Mayer’s released last fall.

The summer trek will kick off in Charlotte, NC on July 16 and wrap up two months later in West Palm Beach FL on September 11. The trek’s current spring leg started in early February and will continue in Seattle on March 31. Eight dates remain before the leg wraps up in Chicago on April 10.

Tickets for the Hartford, CT show on August 7, Mayer’s hometown, will be going on sale on April 16. On April 17 selected other dates will be going on sale. A pre-sale will be held for Citi card members starting on April 14. Additional information is posted on Mayer’s website.

“Battle Studies” was co-produced by Steven Jordan and Mayer. It was released last November and debuted in the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s 200 chart. During the album’s first week it sold 286,000 copies. According to a recent press release, Mayer describes the set as a liberated, relaxed and confessional album incorporating the simplicity, warmth and melodies from 1970’s-80’s California pop and rock music.

Mayer said the way I approach music is similar to how a director does a period piece. “Continuum” was about Soul and R&B, whereas “Battle Studies” had the timelessness of Neil Young, Fleetwood Mac and Tom Petty in mind when it was written. The messages and melodies are from the gut and concise with their simple efficiency.

“Continuum,” the previous studio album from Mayer released in 2006, won Mayer three Grammy nominations in 2007 and two awards: “Waiting on the World to Change” won Best Male Pop Vocal Performance and “Continuum” won for Best Pop Vocal Album.

Mayer Tacks on Additional Cities to Summer Tour

Posted by Janice Bryant On June - 2 - 2008

More dates have been added to John Mayer’s upcoming summer tour. It will occur at the same time that he releases his CD/DVD live collection.

Mayer’s trek, sponsored by BlackBerry, will kickoff at Summerfest in Milwaukee on July 2. Brett Dennen and Colbie Caillat will be joining John on his first leg. The trek will be visiting cites across the US in addition to Toronto through the first part of August. The second leg, which was recently announced, will be launching in Charlotte, NC on August 19 and remain on the East Coast through August. The first few shows in the run will have Paramore as the opener, then from there OneRepublic will take over.

Starting June 2 the new date pre-sale tickets will be made available by Music Today. Access to the general public will occur on June 7.

In a blog post Mayer said recently that the set lists in addition to many of his hits will also include favorite covers and blue tunes of songs that moved me. The goal is to introduce people to some music that might not have been found otherwise. According to a recent press release, on his website Mayer will be inviting fans to vote on encores and to include video footage and photos from fans at the shows.

Mayer is also preparing for the release on July 1 of his “Where the Light Is: John Mayer Live in Los Angeles.” The show was filmed at Nokia Theater last December. It’s a two CD/DVD set as well as Blue-Ray package featuring three very distinct sets. One set is an acoustic performance, another is a performance that includes the full band of Mayer’s, and the third is a set featuring the John Mayer Trio with Pino Palladino and Steve Jordan.

Mayer’s new live set follows his 2006 release “Continuum,” the Grammy award winning album that spawned the No. 1 hit single “Waiting on the World to Change.” “Continuum” also included another hit single “Dreaming With a Broken Heart” as well as the latest single from Mayer, “Say,” which currently is climbing the mainstream and pop radio charts.

Posted by Janice Bryant On April - 8 - 2008

Dates for John Mayer’s summer tour have been announced. Brett Dennen and Colbie Caillat will be the openers for the trek as Mayer continues supporting his album “Continuum,” which was released last year.

On July 2, the outing for the songwriter/singer will be kicking off at Summerfest in Milwaukee and then be traveling to 21 cities until early August. It will include a Mayer appearance at Rothbury Festival on July 6 in Michigan.

John Mayer Keeps the Music Going with Summer Leg of ‘Continuum’ Tour

Posted by Janice Bryant On October - 30 - 2006

A summer leg has been added by John Mayer to his tour in support of “Continuum,” his platinum-selling album released in September. This follows his two wins at the Grammys earlier this month.

Currently, Mayer is touring the Eastern part of the US. The winter trek will wrap up at Madison Square Garden in New York City with a sold out show on February 28. From April 1-12 Mayer will be in Australia before starting on a run in Canada that will last through May 1.

On June 1 Mayer will be launching his summer tour in Ridgefield, WA. Through August he will be playing arenas and amphitheaters coast to coast, including a stand of two nights at Red Rocks in Colorado.

In addition Mayer, along with over 100 other acts, has been tapped to perform at the Live Earth concert on July 7. It’s an event of 24 hours that will span all seven continents to spread the word on the world’s climate crisis.

Following the recent Grammy wins of Mayer’s for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance and Best Pop Vocal Album, “Continuum” sales increased 180 percent. The sales pushed the album back onto Billboard’s 200 chart in the Top 10.

The third studio album from Mayer, “Continuum,” marks the first time Mayer has been a producer on an album. The set, with a heavy blues influence, has spawned his No. 1 hit single “Waiting on the World to Change” along with his current hit “Gravity.”

“Continuum” follows “Heavier Things” from 2003 as well as “Try!,” his live album with John Mayer Trio, a collaboration with the drummer Steve Jordan as well as the bassist Pino Palladino.

Mayer over his career has sold over 9 million albums and won five Grammy awards.
